| This oil on illustration board depiction of a beagle and his quarry, a rabbit, is by the noted animal painter Edwin Megargeee (American, 1883-1958). Megargee was an illustrator and etcher as well as a painter. Born in 1883 in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, he studied at Georgetown University from 1899-1900, Drexel Institute in Philadelphia from 1900-1904, and finally at the prestigious Art Students League in New York City from 1904-1905. He was a breeder and painter of gun dogs and wrote and illustrated several dog dictionaries. He also painted horses, cattle and cock-fighting scenes. The well known greyhound logo for the Greyhound Bus Company was designed by Megargee. He was on the board of directors of the American Kennel Club. Several of his game-shooting scenes appeared in "Field & Stream" and in his portfolio, "Gun Dogs at Work" throughout the 1940s-1950s. His younger brother Lawrence Alonzo was also an illustrator. He is best known as a leading portrayer of prize-winning gun dogs, including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels. Megargee is listed in "Who Was Who in American Art."
