| This wonderful circa 1870s-90s oil on canvas rendition of the Civil War Bouquet Battery memorializes a well known image that first appeared in the June 1, 1861 edition of "Harper's Weekly. This Battery was a strategic outpost at the Relay House erected on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad crossing on the Patapsco River near Baltimore. The Battery comanded the bridge at the Relay House and was manned by Union volunteers who searched all trains going west to Washington and points south. On May 5, 1861 Brigadier General Benjamin F. Butler took possession of the Rela House. The Patapsco flows into the Chesapeake Bay at Baltimore The occupation of the Relay House on the B & O Railroad was the condition precedent to the occupation of Baltimore. This painting should be of great interest to Civil War buffs, especially those who live in the Baltimore area and can actually pinpoint this site. The image (no. 328) of the battery that this painting illustrates resides in the Mellon Foundation Catalogue at the Maryland Historical Society Library.
