| This wonderful Cubist portrait by the American artist Jonah Kinigstein is oil on canvas. Using very heavy brushwork and heavy impasto to underscore the geometric forms, the artist has found a novel way to express the human figure. The painting is signed lower right and on reverse stretcher at top. It also reads Paris. It dates to circa 1947-1951, the period where the artist was studying in Paris. Dimensions: 31.75 x 25.25 inches, sight size; 33.5 x 27.25 inches in a floater frame. Kinigstein was obviously influenced by the Cubists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque who developed the style between 1907 and 1914, reducing objects into geometric forms, then representing them from multiple points of view. He studied at Cooper Union Art School, Academy de la Grand Chaumiere, Belle Arte in Rome, and was a Fullbright Fellow to Italy. Kinigstein's work is held at the Museum of Modern Art; Albright-Knox Art Gallery; Nelson Gallery of Art; Ain Herod Museum in Tel-Aviv. He has exhibited in Young Americans at the Whitney Museum of American Art; National Academy of Arts and Letters; ACA Gallery; Rittenhouse Gallery; Washington Irving Gallery; and Pindar Gallery. Other Awards: Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award; Perkin-Elmer Prize. Kinigstein was inducted as Academician into the National Academy of Design in 1997. | ||||||||||
