LARGE c. 1850-60 PINCHBECK GOLD PLATE & AGATE CROSS
This magnificent circa 1850-1860 fired-on gold plate cross with agate might have belonged to a bishop. It is of English origin and has a beautiful dolphin bail. Dimensions are 7-1/4 x 4-3/4 inches. It weighs 124 grams. In the early eighteenth century, Christopher Pinchbeck, a London watchmaker, developed an alloy of copper and zinc that was almost indistinguishable from gold, and it was subsequently used to imitate gold. This is a fabulous piece in excellent condition.
